How to Respond to a 5-Star Review With No Comment (12 Replies)
Someone gave you full marks and wrote nothing. There's no detail to reference and no problem to fix — so most owners skip it. Here's why that's a mistake.
Five stars. Nothing written. No name you recognise, no clue which visit it was.
Almost every business skips these. There's no detail to reference, no problem to solve, and it feels slightly odd to thank someone for a rating they gave in two seconds.
Skip them anyway and you leave three real things on the table.
Why the silent five-star is worth two minutes
It closes the loop with a customer who liked you. People who rate you five stars are your most likely repeat customers. A short acknowledgement makes them more likely to review you again after their next visit, and reviewers who review you twice are how a profile quietly compounds.
It fills the gap on your page. Look at your own profile the way a stranger does. If your replies only appear under complaints, your review section reads as a complaints log with some silent ratings in between. Replies under the positive reviews balance the whole page.
It signals an actively managed profile. Consistent engagement across all reviews — not just the ones that scare you — is the pattern Google's local ranking rewards. The mechanics are in how Google reviews affect your SEO ranking.
A profile where the owner only appears under 1-star reviews tells a story. Make sure it isn't the only story on the page.
The rules for a no-comment five-star reply
- Keep it to one or two sentences. They wrote nothing; a four-line response is strange.
- Don't invent a detail. "So glad you enjoyed the pasta" when you have no idea what they ate is a guess your reader can smell.
- Don't ask why they didn't write anything. Ever.
- Vary the wording. Twelve identical "Thank you for the 5 stars!" replies down your page look automated — see why templates backfire.
- Use their name if there is one. It's the only personal detail available.
12 replies to rotate
- Thank you for the five stars — really appreciate it. See you next time.
- Thanks [name]! Lovely to see this. Hope to have you back soon.
- Five stars — thank you. It means a lot to a small business like ours.
- Appreciate you taking the time to rate us, [name]. Thank you.
- Thank you! Glad we got it right. The team will be pleased to see this.
- Thanks very much for the rating — always good to know we're on the right track.
- Five stars is the best kind of feedback. Thank you, and see you again.
- Thank you [name] — much appreciated. Give us a shout any time.
- Really kind of you to leave this. Thank you, and hope to see you soon.
- Thanks for the five stars. If there's ever anything we can do better, we're all ears.
- Appreciate the rating — thank you for choosing us.
- Thank you! Ratings like this genuinely help people find us. Much appreciated.
Number ten is worth a mention. It invites feedback without demanding anything and occasionally gets you a real reply telling you something useful. Don't use it on every one — it gets repetitive — but it earns its place in the rotation.
What about a 5-star from someone you don't recognise?
Reply exactly the same way. Do not write "we don't have a record of your visit." It reads as suspicious of a customer who has just done you a favour, and every reader sees it.
If a burst of no-comment five-stars arrives at once from accounts with no history, that's different — worth checking, because unusual patterns can get your genuine reviews filtered too. See why Google reviews disappear.
The mistake to avoid
Don't use a positive reply as a marketing slot. "Thank you! Don't forget we're now open Sundays and offering 20% off bookings this month!"
The reviewer did something generous for free. Answering with an advert cheapens it, and the next reader sees a business that turns gratitude into a sales pitch. A warm two-line thank you does more for you commercially than any promotion squeezed in underneath it.
Make it a five-minute weekly habit
Batch them. Once a week, open your profile, answer every unanswered positive review with a different short line, and close it. Ten reviews take under five minutes when you're not agonising over each one.
Reploi does this automatically — a different, natural, short reply for every positive review in your own voice, so the easy ones never pile up. Start free — 5 replies/month →
